Mass Shooting at Michigan State University: Multiple Injuries Reported, Suspect at Large

Police said they were called about 8:18 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13 to Michigan State University’s Berkey Hall on a report of shots fired. They arrived to find injured people.

UPDATE: Three people are dead and five injured in a shooting on the Michigan State University campus.

MSU police at about 11:40 p.m. confirmed the fatalities.

Campus police said that there were “multiple reported injuries” and a single suspect was still on foot as of 10:30 p.m.

“The suspect description is a short male with a mask, possibly Black. Please continue to shelter in place,” MSU police said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Michigan State University on Monday evening after shots were fired on campus. 

Campus police said that there were “multiple reported injuries” and a single suspect was still on foot as of 10:30 p.m. 

“The suspect description is a short male with a mask, possibly Black. Please continue to shelter in place,” MSU police said.

Police first issued a shelter-in-place order at 8:40 p.m., saying that shots were fired near Berkey Hall on the northern boundary of campus. 

The suspect was still on foot at 9:16 p.m. and another shooting was reported around 9:26 p.m. at IM East, a gym on campus. 

Victims were being transported to Sparrow Hospital.

Blake Maday, an MSU student who lives on campus, said that students were sheltered inside. 

“Everyone is barricaded in their places with lights out,” Maday told Fox News Digital. “Students are sending in all types of reports and it seems like people are sending the police on a wild goose chase with nothing confirmed.”

MSU canceled classes for the next two days and urged students not to come to campus on Tuesday.

The FBI, Michigan State Police, and other agencies were assisting on campus. The FAA implemented temporary flight restrictions over MSU’s campus through Wednesday.

MSU Police posted a warning at 8:40 p.m. EST: “MSU ALERT: There have been shots fired near Berkey Hall on the East Lansing campus. Please secure-in-place immediately. Police are active on scene. More information to follow.”

“Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight,” Whitmer tweeted. Sen. Debbie Stabenow also tweeted that she was tracking the shooting.

Updates from MSU Police:

At 9:34 police said, “It appears there is only one suspect at this time.”

Victims being transported to Sparrow Hospital.

They were still looking for one or more suspects as of 10:25 p.m.

Michigan Daily reports two killed, “#BREAKING: Campus police at Michigan State University issued a safety alert at 8:31 p.m. Monday following gunshots reported outside Berkey Hall. According to the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety, police are currently on the scene. At least two fatalities confirmed.”

Gov. Whitmer, “I’ve been briefed on the shooting at Michigan State University. The Michigan State Police along with @msupolice, local law enforcement and first responders are on the ground. Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more.”
