Georgia State Representative Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock) has formally introduced articles of impeachment against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
The impeachment, led by the Georgia Freedom Caucus, alleges that DA Willis has conducted herself in a manner unbecoming of her position, specifically pointing to her pursuit of a high-profile indictment against President Trump and 18 others. These indictments are related to their challenges to the 2020 election results in Fulton County and other parts of Georgia. Byrd and her supporters argue that this action breaches the constitutional right to question election integrity.
In a statement, Rep. Byrd accused Willis of “weaponizing her office for political gain” and asserted that Willis’ actions have “embarrassed the criminal justice system in Fulton County and our state.”
With freedom on the line, bold action is necessary. It's time for the legislature to do its constitutional duty and hold corrupt Fulton DA Fani WIllis accountable, which is why I have introduced H.R. 872, articles of impeachment against Fani WIllis. Byrd accuses Willis of suffering “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and urges state lawmakers to intervene and address her disregard for the Constitution.
In addition, Byrd raises concerns about a potential conflict of interest in Willis hiring a “paramour” in the case against President Trump. Byrd also emphasizes that a judge barred Willis from investigating Lt. Gov. Burt Jones due to her financial support for his opponent during his campaign for lieutenant governor.
Furthermore, Byrd argues that Willis should not have assumed office given her outstanding debts to the Georgia Elections Commission at that time.
It remains uncertain what impact the controversy surrounding Willis and Wade will have on the case against Trump and his co-defendants.
Willis has not denied the accusations against her, although she disagreed with the claim that she paid Wade more than the value of his services. Instead, she has characterized the criticism of her and Wade as “racial discrimination.”
