Having played four seasons in the NFL, Powell’s journey took him from being a standout college player to a fifth-round draft pick in 2014. Despite grappling with injuries, he experienced stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks. In 2018, he joined the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football for the 2019 season, but the minor league organization folded later that year.
The Players Association, in a statement, commended Powell as a family man who played honorably throughout his brief career.
“Today we mourn the loss of Ronald Powell – a father, a brother, and a son who was loved and cherished by so many,” the NFLPA Former Players Services said in a statement shared Tuesday. “We send comfort to all those who knew Ronald. #RIP.”
