Following the stabbing attack in prison that left Derek Chauvin critically injured, his family, including his mother Carolyn Pawlenty, spoke out. Pawlenty discovered the news through media reports and stated that she hadn’t received any notification from prison officials, as reported by Alpha News.
Pawlenty questioned, “How the hell do these news agencies know and his own mother doesn’t even know? And that [prison] has an emergency contact number [for me].” She further disclosed being “worried and scared” about her son’s condition.
“I can’t even think what to say. I haven’t been to bed and made a path in my kitchen and living room floor by pacing,” Pawlenty added.

Bill Mohrman, Chauvin’s attorney, stated that he made efforts to reach out to the Bureau of Prisons regarding his client but hasn’t received any response from the agency. “We have attempted to contact the Bureau of Prisons regarding the media reports regarding Mr. Chauvin and we have not heard back,” Mohrman told the outlet.
Gregory M. Erickson, another attorney representing Chauvin, criticized the Arizona prison for its lack of transparency. In a statement issued on Saturday, Erickson said, “It appears to be indicative of a poorly run facility and indicates how Derek’s assault was allowed to happen.”
“How the family members who are in charge of Derek’s decisions regarding his personal medical care and his emergency contact were not informed after his stabbing further indicates the institution’s poor procedures and lack of institutional control,” he added.
Breaking Digest reported that at around 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Chauvin was attacked at the Federal Correctional Prison in Tucson, Arizona. The prison personnel had to administer life-saving measures before Chauvin was taken to the hospital, as reported by the Bureau of Prisons.
Chauvin’s condition has been updated to “stable.”
Last week, the Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal citing concerns of a biased trial due to “pretrial publicity and concerns for violence in the event of an acquittal.”
