A Los Angeles man is facing murder charges for deliberately driving his car into a crowd of pedestrians at a Long Beach intersection on Saturday evening, resulting in one fatality.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers from the Long Beach Police Department discovered 60-year-old Romelia Cuarenta Aguilar on the road after being struck by a vehicle. Despite immediate medical assistance from the officers and subsequent aid from the Long Beach Fire Department, Aguilar was pronounced dead on-site. Other victims were transported to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Khalid Yagobbi from Los Angeles, was driving a Chevrolet Bolt at a high speed in the wrong direction, running a red light and plowing into pedestrians and multiple vehicles without slowing down. Yagobbi was arrested at the scene and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail.
Chief Wally Hebeish of the Long Beach Police Department promptly opened an investigation into the incident. Preliminary evidence suggested that the collision may have been intentional, prompting Homicide and Collision Investigations detectives to take over the case. The FBI also responded to the scene.
“Due to the suspicious circumstances of the incident and current international events, the Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene. At this time, there is no indication that this incident was an act of terror nor associated with the current violence in Israel; however, the investigation is ongoing,” the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement.
Political activist Laura Loomer asserted that Khalid Yagobbi is a “Muslim terrorist who intentionally carried out an Islamic terrorist attack,” and included an unverified photograph of Yagobbi.

According to X users, Yagobbi’s race is listed as “other”, and his mugshot was omitted from his arrest record, which suggests that authorities are attempting to conceal details of his identity.
