Ted Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, was found dead in his prison cell Saturday morning, according to a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson. He was 81.
Kaczynski was previously in a maximum security facility in Colorado but was moved to a medical facility in North Carolina in December 2021 due to poor health.
Kaczynski, who went nearly 20 years without being captured, was considered America’s most prolific bomber. His 16 bombs killed three people and injured two dozen others, the FBI said, until his arrest in 1996.
According to Fox News, Ted Kaczynski, a mathematician educated at Harvard, utilized mail to send lethal homemade bombs to individuals whom he believed were responsible for the environmental damage caused by technological progress. The network highlights that Kaczynski’s acts of terrorism, which even involved a bombing targeting an American Airlines flight using an altitude-triggered device, had a profound impact on how Americans approach mailing packages and boarding airplanes.
In 1995, a threat emerged stating that a plane departing from Los Angeles would be detonated during the Fourth of July weekend, leading to widespread disruption in air travel and mail services. Ted Kaczynski later claimed it was a “prank.”
As of now, the exact cause of his death remains unknown, according to US News.
