A Boise, Idaho student-athlete died after suddenly collapsing during practice.
Justin Smith, a senior on Timberline High School’s varsity tennis team, collapsed during practice on April 10th and later died at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center’s emergency room in Boise.
He was only 17 years old.
The cause and manner of his death are listed as pending by the Ada County Coroner’s Office.
An investigation is being conducted by the Boise Police Department.
“This tragic loss has raised many emotions for the Timberline school community,” the Boise School District said in a statement. “Timberline High School has its Crisis Team in place to meet the needs of students, parents and school personnel during this difficult time. Counselors are available for any student, staff, or family who may need or want help surrounding this loss. We encourage Timberline families and staff to contact Timberline’s Counseling Department with questions or concerns.”
A GoFundMe account has been organized on behalf of Smith’s family and has already raised more than $30,000.
“As an outstanding student, tennis player, friend, brother and son, Justin’s life has positively impacted so many,” Jennifer Price wrote on GoFundMe. “The gravity of grief is real and it is at times like this we have an opportunity to come together as a community to show our love and support.”
