On Monday morning, Ronna McDaniel announced her intention to resign next month from her position as chairwoman of the RNC, concluding a seven-year tenure as head of the organization.
This move comes in the wake of President Trump’s decisive victory in the South Carolina primary on Saturday and less than two weeks after Trump endorsed a new cadre of leaders to assume control of the organization. This new lineup includes North Carolina GOP chairman Michael Whatley as chairman, Lara Trump as co-chair, and Chris LaCivita, a top campaign aide, as the party’s chief operating officer.
In a statement, she said, “I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”
Below is her full statement to the New York Times:
Some of my proudest accomplishments include firing Nancy Pelosi, winning the popular vote in 2022, creating an Election Integrity Department, building the committee’s first small-dollar grassroots donor program, strengthening our state parties through our Growing Republican Organizations to Win program, expanding the Party through minority outreach at our community centers, and launching Bank Your Vote to get Republicans to commit to voting early.
I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing.
The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee, and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.
Initially nominated by President Trump after he was elected in 2016, McDaniel secured the position in 2019, 2021, and 2023.
Despite her previous victories being relatively easy, there has been some resistance from MAGA supporters.
Fox News reported:
Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel will formally resign her position after the March 5 Super Tuesday primaries, weeks after former President Trump asked her to step down.
The announcement comes weeks after Trump revealed his recommendations for changes within the RNC earlier this month. He proposed that North Carolina GOP chair Michael Whatley take over as chairman, while his daughter-in-law Lara Trump and campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita also receive leadership positions.
“It has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve the Republican National Committee for seven years as Chairwoman to elect Republicans and grow our Party,” McDaniel said in a statement. “I have decided to step aside at our Spring Training on March 8 in Houston to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”‘
“I remain committed to winning back the White House and electing Republicans up and down the ballot in November,” she added, before thanking her husband, family and RNC staff.
