Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made an announcement on Monday, revealing her intentions to draft an appropriations rider aimed at defunding the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith, along with the entire investigation into President Trump.
Greene shared the news in a tweet, where boldly announced, “This morning, I’m writing an appropriations rider to DEFUND Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office and entire investigation. I will not vote for ANY appropriations bill to fund the weaponization of government.” She expressed her optimism that fellow Republican colleagues would join her in this initiative.
If this rider is included in an appropriations bill and successfully passed, it would result in a reallocation of funds, effectively cutting off the funding for Smith’s office and the ongoing investigation. However, it is important to note that any rider must garner the support of a majority of lawmakers in both the House and Senate in order to become law, which poses a significant challenge to its enactment.
Watch:
The investigation that Marjorie Taylor Greene seeks to defund was initiated by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022. This inquiry represents an extension of two previous investigations initiated by the Department of Justice (DOJ) into the actions of President Trump during his time in office.
Leading the investigation is Jack Smith, an experienced federal prosecutor appointed by Garland. Smith’s mandate is to delve into Trump’s involvement in the January 6 protests at the United States Capitol, as well as his handling of government records, which includes the examination of classified documents found within Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago.
Recently, on June 8, a grand jury in Miami, Florida, indicted Trump on 37 felony charges. These charges include willful retention of national security material, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. They are connected to Trump’s actions related to the removal and retention of presidential materials when he left the White House.
Earlier today, President Trump released a statement announcing his intention to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Joe Biden, whom he accurately characterized as “the most corrupt president in the history of the USA.”
