The Georgia State Senate is preparing this week to authorize a subpoena-empowered investigative committee to investigate the alleged corruption of Fani Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County, as reported by Breitbart News.
State Senator Greg Dolezal (R) is leading the initiative, following Governor Brian Kemp’s (R) recent decision not to launch a criminal investigation into Willis. Instead, Kemp has opted to await action from a non-operational oversight committee.
Governor Kemp emphasized his commitment to upholding the law and the Constitution in Georgia, stating, “The bottom line is that in the state of Georgia as long as I’m governor, we’re going to follow the law and the Constitution, regardless of who it helps and harms politically. Over the last few years, some inside and outside of this building may have forgotten that. But I can assure you that I have not,” according to AJC Politics.
“In Georgia, we will not be engaging in political theater that only inflames the emotions of the moment. We will do what is right. We will uphold our oath to public service. And it is my belief that our state will be better off for it,” Kemp added.
The Senate’s potential committee will be tasked with “securing the attendance of witnesses or the production of documents and materials” related to Willis, as per a resolution introduced by Sen. Dolezal.
Comprising nine senators, with three Democrats among them, this committee is uniquely positioned in Georgia to conduct a thorough examination of the allegations against Willis.
Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, in an exclusive statement to Breitbart, stated, “The Georgia legislature has a responsibility to hold public officials accountable. Recent reports have been deeply troubling, and I appreciate Sen. Dolezal’s leadership on this issue.”
The establishment of this committee appears to be imminent. Senator Dolezal is expected to introduce the resolution on Monday, and subsequently, it is likely to be referred to the Senate Rules Committee on Tuesday.
Pending approval by the Rules Committee, a vote on the Senate floor could take place within the week. Upon Senate approval, the Committee on Assignments will be tasked with appointing the members.
