The father of Democrat candidate for state representative in Washington, Clyde Shavers, has accused him of lying about his military service and misrepresenting other parts of his background.
Clyde has claimed that he served as a nuclear submarine officer for eight years. His father, Brett Shavers, wrote in a letter to Clyde’s opponent, Greg Gilday, that the claim is false.
Brett also revealed that Clyde had lied about numerous details, from his father’s retirement to his mom’s immigration to the United States from Japan. He said he wished he had not been drawn into the middle of his son’s dishonest campaign, and that he and his wife needed to “correct the record factually and personally as a matter of integrity.”
In his letter, former marine Brett Shavers wrote (excerpts):
“I am Clyde Shavers’ father. I speak for both me and my wife regarding our son’s political campaign.”
“My wife and I write this only to correct the record factually and personally as a matter of integrity.“
“In watching the past weeks of watching our son’s campaign, I see that it has led to accusations of untruthfulness and conduct that I wished to never have seen or been drawn in the middle of.”
“Clyde was never a submarine officer, not even for a day.“
“Clyde has only disdain for the military. I have seen Clyde’s use of veteran status used heavily as a seal of endorsement of honor and integrity, even as he or his campaign continually use the phrase “son of a Marine” for his credibility. There are no words that I have that could come close to overemphasize Clyde’s negative view of the military…”
“I obviously credit his service, but not the abuse of it.”
“I have heard Clyde speak of things that have never happened.“
