One Dead, One Injured in Explosion at Petroleum Plant in Illinois

An explosion and fire at a suburban Chicago petroleum plant killed one person and injured a second Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office said one person was confirmed dead and a second was transported to a hospital in Joliet following the explosion at Seneca Petroleum in Lemont, Illinois. The condition of the injured person, who was taken to Silver Cross Hospital, was not immediately available, CBS Chicago reported. 

Multiple emergency crews responded to the scene around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

As of 11 a.m., the fire was under control, and sheriff’s office officials said there was no hazmat situation and no danger to the public.

At least one person was killed and another injured in an explosion and fire Tuesday at a petroleum plant in Lemont, authorities said.

The Will County Sheriff’s office confirmed the fatality just after 11 a.m. at Seneca Petroleum, located at 12640 S. New Ave. in Lemont. Lemont Fire Protection Chief Daniel Tasso said one other person suffered a minor injury in the explosion.

Multiple emergency crews were responding to the scene around 9:30 a.m., sparking road closures around the area.

The Lemont Fire District called the event an “active incident,” and asked people in the area to avoid New Avenue at 127th Street. Romeoville police also tweeted that they were assisting Will County with traffic control and road closures, shutting down northbound New Avenue and High Road at 135th Street.

The explosion might have originated from an asphalt tank, officials said.

Fire officials said there is no hazmat situation at the scene and there is no danger to the public.

Several power lines were knocked down during the explosion. OSHA and ComEd have been called to the scene to investigate.

Lemont is roughly 30 miles southwest of Chicago.
