The FBI raid followed a successful petition by Oakland residents to place a recall measure on the November ballot.
The group Oakland United to Recall Sheng Thao (OUST) announced that it had gathered 40,595 signatures supporting the recall effort to replace Thao.
Only 25,000 signatures are required to trigger a recall election.
OUST stated that they initiated the recall effort because crime has “gotten worse” under Thao’s time as mayor.
