Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio announced on Twitter Monday that one of his campaign canvassers suffered serious injuries after being attacked while knocking on doors for the senator.
“Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a Desantis hat was brutally attacked by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood in #Hialeah #Florida. He suffered internal bleeding, a broken jaw & will need facial reconstructive surgery,” Rubio tweeted.
Rubio tweeted several pictures of the victim, showing him bloodied and swollen in the back of an ambulance and in a hospital bed.
According to a police report published by Local 10 News, one suspect in the attack was identified as Javier Lopez. The report said Lopez allegedly was blocking the sidewalk while the canvasser was trying to pass by. The canvasser then tried to walk toward the other side of the street to get around him when Lopez allegedly said, “You can’t pass by here, this is my neighborhood.”
The senator also addressed the attack at a campaign event in Hialeah Monday.
“I can tell you this: political violence should not be tolerated by anyone,” he told his audience, according to the Miami Herald. “Our side or their side, we don’t tolerate political violence. In this country, we decide who governs not by street mobs, we decide who governs at the ballot box.”
