Doctors have been left baffled after an Oklahoma police officer woke up one day to discover that he was paralyzed from the neck down.
Okmulgee County police officer, Larry Porter, was suddenly paralyzed on September 1 and has been looking for answers since. With the help of his fiancée, Porter was carried out of bed and taken to Okmulgee ER where doctors tried to figure out why he could not move.
The doctors were not able to establish the cause of Larry’s paralysis but discovered that his potassium levels were extremely low, so he was airlifted to Hillcrest Intensive care unit, where the news got even worse. He was told that his pituitary gland and thyroid were failing but the exact cause of his condition is still unknown.
After spending 19 days in the ICU and undergoing numerous tests, Larry still doesn’t know what happened to him. He is currently waiting to hear if he will be accepted to the Mayo Clinic, according to Newson6.
From Newson6:
A Green Country family is looking for answers, after a Lighthorse Police Officer woke up and was suddenly paralyzed from the neck down.
September 1st was anything but an ordinary day for Larry Porter. It was his day off work as a Lighthorse Police Officer. He planned to get out of bed to eat breakfast that morning, but he was completely paralyzed.
“My girlfriend, she assisted me to get me into the car and I went to Okmulgee ER and they told me my potassium was so low and I got life flighted,” Larry said.
“It’s hard to talk about because I mean, I’m missing out on my girls and I have two step boys that I’m missing out on. I’m not able to be home with them,” Larry said.
Not only is Larry devastated about his health, this is also financially devastating for his family. His mother is leaving her job to care for her son full time.
“Larry is a hard worker. He’s dedicated to his community. He’s dedicated to his family, friends. There’s nothing that Larry wouldn’t do for anyone,” Christi said.
That’s the very support he needs now.
“We’ve got to get this diagnosis right. And we’ve got to know how to fix him and get him back to everyone that loves him,” Christi said.
