In a recent decision, the US Supreme Court handed down a ruling in favor of Lorie Smith, a Christian web designer based in Colorado. The court voted 6-3 in favor of Smith, who objected to creating wedding websites for LGBTQ couples.
During the oral arguments last year, conservative justices emphasized the web designer’s freedom of speech, asserting her right to choose which websites she designs.
The web designer received a favorable ruling from the conservative majority on Friday.
The majority opinion was delivered by Justice Neil Gorsuch.
“The First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all persons are free to think and speak as they wish, not as the government demands. Because Colorado seeks to deny that promise, the judgment is Reversed” wrote Gorsuch.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a liberal member of the court, expressed her dissent by stating, “Today, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class,” as reported by AP News.
Greg Price shared that Gorsuch, in his written opinion, “spent a good portion of the majority opinion in 303 creative taking an absolute nuke to Sotomayor’s dissent.” Price then quoted from Gorsuch’s decision that ‘[i]t is difficult to read the dissent [by the liberal minded judges] and conclude we are looking at the same case.’
This ruling adds to the series of significant victories for conservatives, which occurred yesterday. These victories include the overturning of affirmative action policies in student admissions and the reinforcement of religious liberty through a decision in favor of a Christian postal worker who refused to work on Sundays.
