Surf legend Archie Kalepa, aka Uncle Archie, has taken the initiative to organize a grassroots volunteer army to provide aid to survivors of the monumental fire that tragically claimed the lives of more than 100 Hawaiians last week, and essentially wiped the town of Lahaina off of the map. Hundreds are still unaccounted for.
This week, surfer Kai Lenny spoke with CBS News in Maui to discuss Kalepa’s relief effort.
In his conversation with CBS News, Lenny revealed that people within the disaster-stricken area have reported a noticeable absence of government officials.
Lenny said, “It was just like, day after day, ‘Where are they?’”
Lenny went on to say, “I haven’t seen one state, one county, one federal official at any one of the donation hubs where people are most suffering,” he said. “People are sleeping in their cars. People are asking for specific items now.”

Joe Biden announced that he plans to travel to Hawaii to assess the disaster-stricken area.
