Alan Tancreti, an officer with the Newington Police Department and a former assistant coach of North Haven High School’s varsity hockey team, died suddenly Saturday, officials said.
Tancreti was a father of three and an “ambitious, caring and supportive” colleague, according to police.
Tancreti, 49, suffered an “unexpected medical emergency” while he was off-duty at his home on Saturday, Sergeant Ryan Deane said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

Today, the members of the Newington Police Department carry the burden of a heavy heart as we share with you the tragic passing of Officer Alan Tancreti.
On Saturday October 1, Officer Tancreti suffered an unexpected medical emergency while he was off duty at his home. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders and medical staff Officer Tancreti passed away. Words can not express the tremendous loss our family feels after losing Alan.
“Tank” as he was affectionetly known throughout the department was ambitious, caring, supportive, and a great compliment to an amazing group of professionals. Alan above all else was a dedicated father to his three children.
We thank the community and our law enforcemnent partners for the outpouring of support and ask that you pray for the Tancreti family as well as our Newington Police family during this extremly difficult time.

In 2018, Tancreti was one of several officers cited for rescuing guests from a Newington motel fire.
Before joining the Newington police force, Tancreti helped coach boys’ varsity hockey for North Haven High School and worked in education, according to a post on the hockey team’s Facebook page.
A woman identifying herself as a high school classmate shared the sad news of his death in a Facebook group for members of North Haven High School’s class of 1992 on Sunday morning.
