Democrat Senator Bob Menendez, who was already facing charges of bribery and corruption, was hit with a new indictment on Thursday.

Last month, federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York obtained a 3-count indictment against Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez.

The indictment outlined how the couple received hundreds of thousands of dollars from three businessmen in exchange for influencing the State Department to support their business interests in Egypt. The bribes included cash, gold, home mortgage payments, “compensation for a low-or-no-show job,” a luxury vehicle, and “other things of value.”

The latest indictment, filed by a federal grand jury in Manhattan, alleges that Menendez acted as a foreign agent, providing sensitive U.S. Government information and secretly assisting the Government of Egypt.

Real estate developer Fred Daibes, New Jersey businessman Wael Hana, and Joseph Uribe were also charged.

“The Senator and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes….. cash, gold, home mortgage payments, jobs, cars, and other things of value” in exchange for “using his power and influence to protect and enrich businessmen and to benefit the government of Egypt,” US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said.

Following the charges, Menendez resigned from his position as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in line with party regulations. Despite the increasing pressure, he has expressed his determination to stay in the Senate and confront the accusations directly.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre became defensive after a reporter drew a comparison between Menendez and Joe Biden – who has not been charged.
